From Jose Dilig: Page 59 of America Is In the Heart, did Luz find out what Jose did to his girl?  Or did the girl tell Luz of what happened?

From RM: "It was cold at night and when morning came the fog was so thick it was tangible.  But it was a safe place and it was far from the surveillance of vigilantes.  Then from nearby El Centro, the center of Filipino population in the Imperial Valley, news came that a Filipino labor organizer had been found dead in a ditch."  Who do you think killed the Filipino labor organizer?

From Tiana Steck: What was the Asiatic Barred Zone?

From Aileen Cabanban: "Living in Delano from the early 1940s on, I discovered that there were all sorts of rackets going on" (73).  What are those rackets?

From Jeanlyn Artajos: What is the significance of the poem "Without Names"?

From Patrick Pham: How would modern YouTube videos help us learn about Asian American Culture?

From Kumi Kirihara: What happened in the event "Third World Student Strike"?  What are the results of the "Third World Student Strike"?

  1. The "rackets" referred to the vices rampant in Delano in the '40s, specifically gambling, prostitution, and corruption. Vera Cruz writes that "the Filipino man, because of his lowly position in society, due to ignorance or discrimination, was often getting taken..."(74). So, besides the poor wages and working conditions, the Filipino migrant workers had to resist falling into debt, disease, theft, bodily harm, and government manipulation and abuse.

  2. How would modern YouTube videos help us learn about Asian American Culture?

I feel like modern YouTube videos help us learn about Asian American Culture because there are some shows and documentaries that help preserve the culture and heritage of Asian American Culture. Everyone these days is on YouTube, nobody really reads newspapers or old scripts or journals regarding Asian American Culture. Kids, Teenagers and adults alike all use YouTube and its the fastest growing way of sharing information.

  3. Q3: The asiastic barred zone was a law that made people from asian under 16 not allowed to immigrate into the U.S. It prevented people with physical disabilities and mental problems unable to enter the U.S. It also made that to immigrate into the U.S you had to be over 16 and be able to read english.

Q6: It would give us a viewpoint from someone who has experienced all the things in the past. We can learn more from them speaking into a video rather from reading the words on a page. Hearing them speak about it with emotion is better then looking at a page and trying to picture it my mind is easier in my opinion.

Q7: People from other nationalities wanted a college of ethnic studies, but was denied. So they went on a strike against them for 5 months. Each day they would rally at noon and police officers would arrest them. The result was them giving up and eventually forming that college in SFSU.

  4. In 1917, the US passed the asiatic barred zone law. This prevented asians under 16 years of age from immigrating to the US. Also, one needs to know how to read and understand English before coming into the country. Also, we could learn alot about asian americans in youtube. Hearing them speak can express their emotion rather than reading a book about their experiences. Plus, most of the videos are entertaining which will keep the viewers attention which is always good.

  5. To answer the question regarding the Third World Student Strike:
This strike is the largest student strike that has ever occurred. Students gathered together to question their education and fight for their right of an education learning their background and their heritage. This strike's purpose was to have a class regarding colored people and their history, something that these colored students can relate to. To me, without this strike, I would not have the opportunity to learn about my history and my people's history in this country, the significance of other ethnicities in America, and the real truth in America's history. Growing up, it was quite disappointing to not see the term Filipino in the American history books. But if another ethnicity would show up in the American history books, it would be because they were either the enemy or a country being fought over for territory.
But these students fought for an education about third world countries.
Here's a youtube video that helps, it may be the same one presented in class:

  7. As a result of the Third World Student Strikes, there was re-hiring of select faculty members, additional admission slots for underrepresented students, and a College of Ethnic Studies was created.

  8. The Asiatic Barred Zone was an act created in 1917 that placed restrictions on immigration from Asian to the United States. Immigrants had to be literate and over the age of 16 and could not be deemed unintelligent or have any mental or physical disabilities.

  9. Youtube videos help spread Asian American culture because it is an easy and free way of spreading information. Although there were other means of spreading information in the past such as radio, tv, newspaper, etc, the internet is a much more accessible way of not only spreading information but also receiving it.

  10. How would modern YouTube videos help us learn about Asian American Culture?

Youtube has a strong Asian community and represent Asian culture today rather than just what we have learned about Asian culture from the past through readings and past accounts. Though some poke fun at Asian stereotypes, they have a point that make us go "hey yea, I kinda do that, too" as in it allows us to connect with how Asians are reflected in society.

  11. The Asiatic Barred Zone, also known Immigration Act of 1917, was the law that the government passed which restricted illiterate, mentally disabled, and (many parts of) Asian people to immigrated to the United States.

The Asiatic Barred zone was a region that included much of eastern Asia and the Pacific Islands from which people could not immigrate.

  12. Q3: The Asiatic Barred Zone was passed based on the fear and hatred of Asian immigrants in 1917. The Asiatic Barred Zone Act intended to restrict immigrants entering the US, especially people from Asia and those who were mentally or physically disabled. Therefore, not only Chinese, but also the other Asians were excluded.
Q7: The Third World Student Strike was a protest that the third country students desired for achieving their political rights. In 1968, African American, Asian American, Chicano and Native American students at San Francisco State College organized campus union known as the Third World Liberation Front. They gathered together to demand the establishment of Third World Colleges. The strike won the establishment of Ethnic Studies program. Without the third world students’ strike, there will be no existence of Ethnic studies for the new generation to learn about their history.

  13. Youtube has help asian communities to spread their beliefs and talents in many ways. First they can publicly broadcast themselves. Second, if they have a lot of subscribers they will get a decent amount of income. From what i heard KevJumba received $10,000 for having over 1,000,000 subscribers and millions of viewers. So its an incentive for these asian american uploaders to make even more videos about asian americans. Another benefit of youtube is that i can learn about different asian american's lifestyle. For Example, Wong Fu production made many funny videos that are related asian stereotypes.

  14. Youtube helps us stay up to date with Asian American culture simply because of the time we spend on the computer and in particular, Youtube itself. We really don't bother reading the newspapers or even watch the news. And it's not like the news media covers Asians anyways so basically the Internet i.e Youtube would be the most popular source for us to stay updated on our own culture.

The asiatic barred zone was a law that disallowed the immigration of Asians under the age of 16. Additionally, Asians with mental or physical disabilities would not be allowed to move to the U.S. And lastly, you would have to be able to read English as a mandatory requirement upon entering the U.S.

  15. The Asiatic Barred Zone, also known as the immigration act of 1917, was the law that was passed to limit the amount of immigrants coming to the U.S from many parts of Asia. It also excluded "unwanted" immigrants, such as people with medical and mental handicaps and disabilities.
