From Jeanalyn Artajos:
When was the first time you ever encountered racism? Was it racism against you, someone you know, or love? If the racism was towards someone else, how did that person feel and how does it affect them today? If it was towards you, how did you feel and how has it affected you today? What story or reading have we encountered where it is similar to your first encounter of racism?

From Heesook Park:
What do you think about Korean Americans? Do you have any negative or positive image about the Koreans?

  1. I actually have a lot of Korean American friends.
Just like with every other race there are individuals who I enjoy hanging out with and individuals who I don't.
I don't judge people based on solely their ethnicity.

  2. Q#1: The first encounter with racism i had was when someone was making fun of my small eyes. It occured in my middle school and people were making fun of how small my eyes were. Its a typical racist term because everyone can tell who asians are because of our eye size. It affects me today because thats how people distinguish asians from everyone else. I mean i can point out many things that differ ethnic groups, but they do not sound offensive. People continuously use our small eyes as an insult when it is merely a trait of us asians.

Q#2: I think korean americans are one of the few people i see in america. I have a mixed feeling between the image. I mean some korean americans are nice, but some can just give off a bad vibe. I dont know very many korean americans so im not too sure on the subject.

  4. I am not sure whether it was racism or not. I went a shopping mall in Boston and when I asked someting to a employee, a Asian woman, she twisted her face. I still don't know why she distorted her face and didn't answer to my question. But few second later, she greeted a white man very cheerfully. I believe that she wanted to throw up or gas out when she saw me or she didn't understand my strong English accent. But who does't understand "Do you have small size same color?" even every strong accent and intonation?

  5. Q1:I believe the racism I've encountered are always either people being comedic or the fact that everyone is being stereotyped. Yet i do know a few people who are very judge mental and like to say that they don't like a certain type of race because of the color of their skin. I never really asked them why and if I did I do not think that I will ever get a reasonable answer except for opinions. Therefore racism is just hatred.

Q2: I have three friends who are Korean American. I also have no positive or negative images about them except for the fact that i just realized they have a lot of similar personalities well at least the ones i know. They have a lot of pride and self esteem, now that i think about it could either be negative or positive.

  7. I love Korean Americans. Every Korean American person i know are the most modest and nicest people in the planet. Plus they are fun to hang out with. I do not think that people should only hang out with people from their own race. Basically, if the person is laid back and not an a-hole then i will more than likely like them.

  8. From living in such a diverse community, the boundaries of race just get blurred and I don't even consider it when I speak to people. Also because of where we live, I can drive to a go and area of Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Chinese group all within the city. As for Korean Americans, it's hard to group them as a whole, because you can like or hate individuals, but overall I love their food, movies, music, and basically their whole culture.

  11. What do I think of Korean-Americans? Honestly, this question strikes me as very odd. You're basically asking me to generalize my feelings about an entire group of people. What was the point of this class if not to broaden one's horizons and help us see past the stereotypes by learning about history and reading first-hand accounts of life in the United States. Am I supposed to say I like Korean-Americans? Am I supposed to say I dislike them? I refuse to do that. Some are assholes. Some are good-hearted. Some are cool. Some are lame. I have close friends who are Korean. I know Koreans that I'm not particularly fond of. That's as far as I can take it.

  12. Since I learned about the Korean culture a few years ago, I really learned how to embrace the culture and the people. I really enjoy listening to kpop and Korean food like kimbap. I even have friends that are Korean-Americans. However, when North Korea bombed the south, I lost a little respect because due to that event one of my former classmates was drafted and had to go back to Korea.
