From Bryan Ly:
What was the most interesting and most horrifying thing you have learned about asian
american history in this class? Why?

From Joseph Choe:
In "Getting Real," Paul Kim encounters a person who
brings up the idea that Korean store owners in South Central LA treat
customers as if they were thieves. The store owners were said to watch and
yell at the customers. "There's no recognition of their status as customers
and your status as the merchant trying to sell something." Do you think the
Korean store owners are justified? Consider the circumstances: the
neighborhoods are rough and life is hard for the grocers. They work long
hours and make very little profit if any at all.

  1. One interesting thing about Asian American Studies is that I didnt realize we talked about and covered all ASPECTS of Asian history. Including the gay civil rights movement in the 60's & 70's along with the Stonewall riots. That really surprised me along with the Korean and African American conficts. One of the most horrifying things that Ive discovered while in this class is the Angel Island stories. Finding out what those people had to endure was very heart breaking.

  2. Just the fact that some people can hate other people so much. I just do not see how people can do that to other people.

  3. The most most horrific thing was probably when reading The Latehomecomer because the conditions were so severe and they were ostracized from their own country as well as America. Plus the story of the woman who ate her own baby was pretty traumatic.

  5. The most horrifying thing i learned in this is was how asians and other minorities were treated worst than animals in the early early 1990s. Other than that i learn alot of interesting things like about the youtube presentations.

  6. The two experiences that stood out most to me were those of the Hmong refugees during the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Angel Island immigrants. I had never heard of the Hmong minority, nor even the existence of the immigration station and the poem-covered walls (despite living in the Bay Area for nearly my entire life).

  7. The most interesting thing I learned in this class is that there are alot of amazing Asian American writers.

One of the most horrifying things i learned was all of the internment and refugee camps. I had no idea how bad it was for Asians coming to America or even just living in their own country.

  8. I was surprised to learn how poorly the Hmong refugees were treated. I wasn't "horrified" per-say by anything in particular though, as learning about the atrocities other groups of people around the world have had to face in my history classes desensitized me a little.

  9. I think the most interesting thing i learned this quarter was learning about the Hmong people. Until this class I have never heard of them, or I just don't remember, so learning about their history was enlightening.
